Matt Pryor had been writing songs since he was a teenager, and was playing in a band called Secret Decoder Ring. While in high school, Ryan Pope, Rob Pope, and Jim Suptic formed a short-lived band called Kingpin. They founded Heroes & Villains Records, an imprint of the successful indie rock label Vagrant Records.
